Program Highlights
In April and May we began with preparations for up-coming summer activities. Activities include Summer Food Service Program, LKLP summer day camps and aviation camp.
April was National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Letcher County LKLP employees along with many community partners participated in a program sponsored by the Letcher County Cabinet for Health and Family Services Protection and Permanency staff. We walked from Whitesburg City Hall to the Letcher County Courthouse, where several community leaders such as, Senator Johnny Ray Turner, Letcher County Judge Executive Jim Ward and Whitesburg Mayor James W. Craft spoke to a crowd of approximately one hundred people. Refreshments were later served and provided by Letcher County LKLP staff.
We completed two wheelchair ramps. Twelve food pantry applications and eighty-seven economic stimulus applications processed. WIA adult program completed seventeen classroom-training participants, administered eleven-profile tests, assisted in eligibility for eight new applicants and processed paperwork for six summer enrollees. WIA youth enrolled ten new participants, conducted leadership activities with three classes at Jenkins High School and conducted two assemblies at Letcher County Central High School. Eighteen participating high school students will be graduating.
The City of Jenkins held their annual PRIDE clean up and Letcher County CSBG and Transportation provided lunch and transportation for the volunteers.
LKLP applied for and was awarded a $10,000.00 grant from Kentucky Housing Corporation for Repair Affair in Letcher County. We are in the process of taking applications for minor home repairs for at least ten low-income households. We have plans to host the event on September 6th 2008. Volunteer applications are also available at our office.
We consider all of our clients important because without them we would be out of work, but every once in a while someone, through home visits, enters the picture with a unique set of circumstances that without the help of the entire community working together we could not improve the life or living conditions of this wonderful and deserving woman. Attached is her story and we hope that she shows you how important it is that you are a part of community action.
