Program Highlights
The Knott County staff has been actively organizing the summer food service program for Knott County and preparing for our summer activities. Once again this year, one of our youth activities, scheduled for July 14 – 18, 2008, will be the Appalachian Folk Arts Camp for Kids - a joint venture in conjunction with Hazard Community College, Knott County Branch. This will be an educational opportunity to expose children to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of our area. A one day Outdoor Classroom Camp is scheduled for June 18th at Carr Creek State Park and Lillie Cornett Woods for 25 disadvantaged youth in Knott County. Also, seven youth from our county will be attending the Aviation Camp at Wendell Ford Airport on July 24th and 25th. We are also hosting a day camp at the Knott County Housing Authority for the week of July 23 – 27, 2008.
On Saturday, April 26th, we joined the Department for Protection and Permanency and our other community partners in observing Child Abuse Prevention Month. Knott CSBG staff provided the posters, balloons, and participated in the walk. We have also been taking applications for volunteer home repair groups that will be coming this summer.
We continue completing forms for individuals receiving Social Security to enable them to receive the tax stimulus benefit - approximately 500 forms have been completed, and approximately 30 households have been served by the workshops on Budget/Credit and Predatory Lending at the Knott County Office.
In early April, at approximately 8:30 in the morning, our office received a call from a single mother who has 3 children. She was in tears, stating that her mobile home had just burned to the ground, and they had lost everything. She also stated that she had no money and didn’t know what she was going to do. Immediately staff began working for this family. The Knott Co. Housing Authority was contacted and an apartment was made available for the next day, provided the deposit and first months rent could be paid. The resource center at the children’s school was contacted and money was obtained for the rent – other community partners were contacted for furniture and household items. We contacted the Red Cross in Louisville and a $900.00 debit card was expedited for next day delivery to purchase food, clothing, and other necessities. Housing was made available the next day and CAP was contacted concerning assistance with purchasing a mobile home - she has been placed on a waiting list and looks forward to moving back to her family neighborhood. Also, the follow up contacts on a referral received from Project Homeless Connect has resulted in a family being able to obtain indoor plumbing (they had carried water from a neighbor’s home for five years). This clearly demonstrates that the combined efforts of the community action staff working with community partners makes a difference by helping people and changing lives.
